The stark beauty of the Sonoma?s northern coast provides the backdrop for a unique artifact of California?s history: in 1812 the Russians established a tenuous hold in North America, outside of Alaska, at Fort Ross. Thirty years later they were gone. The CCT hiker would be wise to leave ample time to visit and explore the museum and the authentically restored fort buildings and stockade.
