Abalone Cove Shoreline Park – Tidepools trailhead

1. Locked auto gate not open to public vehicles. Pedestrians OK
2. No parking any time on Palos Verdes Dr.
3. Roadway path leads to sandy swimming beach and tidepools. Chemical toilet available. No lifeguard
4. Ecological Preserve - nothing may be taken
5. Scenic seacove at end of Portuguese Point. Be aware of breakers; fishermen have been washed out to sea at this point
6. Coastline route downcoast to Smuggler's Cove is impassable
7. Bluff top trail encircles the Portuguese Point pennisula - protected by an open rail fence - and provides superb ocean and shoreline views
8. From December to April, migrating grey whales may be seen offshore. Dolphins- harbor seals- cormorants and pelicans are common
9. Site was once intended by Frank A. Vanderlip, Sr. for a beachfront estate. The stock market crash of 1929 quashed these plans. Remnants of the foundations can be seen
